Ingredients

  • 4 slices sandwich bread
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3 tbsp 45 ml milk
  • 2 tbsp 15 g all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 4 slices ham
  • 2 slices mozzarella cheese
  • 2 slices cheddar cheese
  • 100 g breadcrumbs for coating
  • 1/2 tbsp olive oil or butter per batch as needed
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Method

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and all-purpose flour until smooth. Season with salt and black pepper.
  2. Spread mayonnaise evenly over all four slices of bread.
  3. For the first sandwich, layer two slices of mozzarella cheese and two slices of ham between two slices of bread, with the mayonnaise facing inward.
  4. For the second sandwich, layer two slices of cheddar cheese and two slices of ham between the remaining slices of bread.
  5. Place the breadcrumbs in a shallow dish. Heat olive oil or butter in a nonstick skillet over medium-low heat.
  6. Dip the first sandwich into the egg batter, coating all sides, including the edges. Then coat evenly with breadcrumbs.
  7. Place the sandwich in the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes, turning as needed, until golden brown and crispy on all sides, including the edges.
  8. Transfer to a plate. Repeat with the second sandwich, adding a little more oil or butter if needed.
  9. Serve warm while the cheese is melted and the coating is crispy.

Notes

For the crispiest results, cook over medium-low heat to prevent the breadcrumbs from burning before the cheese melts.
Make sure to coat the edges of each sandwich with egg batter and breadcrumbs for an evenly crispy crust.
Use mozzarella for a mild, stretchy cheese filling or cheddar for a richer, sharper flavor.
Serve immediately for the best crispy texture and melted cheese.
